Terrytoons was an animation studio founded by Paul Terry in 1929. He is credited as having invented the system of cel animation, thereby economizing time and labor in the process. He began by making theatrical shorts, later developing 18 primary characters such as Mighty Mouse, Deputy Dawg, Heckle & Jeckle, Gandy Goose and Manfred just to name a few.

Paul Terry produced an average of 26 cartoons per year, whereas Walt Disney produced 13 per year. He often repeated his motto: "Disney is Tiffany's in this business, and I am the Woolworth's." Mr. Terry sold Terrytoons to CBS in 1958 and year after year, these classic cartoon characters continue to grow in popularity even amongst the kids of today.
